Food products that contain Wasabia japonica.
Since about 2005 Wasabi has become one of the buzz words for food products. These days you can expect to find Wasabi in such diverse foods as jams, bakery, snacks, confectionery, marinades and ice cream.
The problem arises in the fact that the majority of these food products that claim to contain wasabi do not.
The True Wasabi plant is called Wasabia japonica, and because of the difficulty in growing it (and the cost) most manufacturers use a mixture of mustard, horseradish and artificial colouring and flavourings. These give a similar flavour and colour, but not the real taste. It is false advertising at its worst.
