12 checks before Growing Ground Wasabi (Oka)
Most people would think that if you wanted to grow a plant, then all you need is a piece of land, some water and the plants, and then you are away.
For most plants that might be true, however, when you want to set about growing ground wasabi there are 12 checks you must make before you plant.
Why?, you might ask.
When it takes 15 – 18 months to grow a single crop, you need to make sure that the wasabi plant will not die during that period. This is especially true if you want to produce a commercial crop and get some return on your investment.
The following is a list of the basic 12 checks that you need to make before you start planting the Wasabia japonica plants in the ground.
12 checks to carry out.
- Is the area large enough for the number of plants you want to grow?
- Was any member of the Cabbage family grown in that ground in the last three years? If so, then find something else.
- Have you had the soil tested to make sure it hasn’t been poisoned or polluted? Also check for diseases and parasites.
- Does the ground drain well or does it require drainage work?
- Does it have a good, clean and adequate water supply?
- Have you had the water supply tested? Was it free of pollutants?
- Does it need fertilizing?
- Does it need earthworks?
- Does it need shelter from the weather?
- Do you have all the local weather information for the last three years or more available and in your possession?
- Have you determined high and low temperatures, humidity, rainfall etc., and have you sorted out how you are going to deal with the extremes of weather?
- If you are not doing this by yourself, do you have access to labour to look after the plants seven days a week?
These 12 checks need to be done before you even think about planting or even ordering plants for planting.

Michel Van Mellaerts (The Wasabi Maestro) is the recognized World authority and expert on the practical Growing, Processing and Marketing of Wasabia japonica. He and his wife have been commercially growing Wasabia japonica longer than anyone else outside Japan.
Trained as an Engineer he has invented and installed many improved growing systems into their farms. These enable high quality Wasabi to be grown anywhere in the World.
The Wasabi Maestroes have set up commercial Wasabi growing farms from the Arctic Circle to Southern New Zealand, including the Equator. They have worked with individual growers, national governments, and investment groups on four continents.
These growing systems have reduced growing times by nearly 67%, improved yield and quality of the Wasabi rhizome, and increased the levels of active ingredients by nearly 100%. It is these active ingredients that independent scientific studies show kills cancer cells and improves human health.
They pioneered the use of Wasabia japonica in the Nutraceutical and Medical industries. They are at the leading edge of research into the benefits of Wasabi on human and animal health.
The Wasabi Maestroes offer a Training and Consultancy service for potential and actual Wasabi growers who only want to learn from the best. Others spend their time floundering around trying to find out what information is useful and what isn’t.
The Training has been proven and improved over the last 20 years plus of personal commercial Wasabi growing. This has been hands on, getting wet and dirty work – not guesswork from behind a desk.
