Wasabi and Colitis

Wasabia Japonica is a potential functional food to prevent colitis

A new Study published in Food Function on 29th June 2017 makes this claim.

The interesting point about this study is that the researchers did not make the usual caveats and BS legalese to satisfy the bureaucrats of the FDA. They state categorically that Wasabia japonica PREVENTS Colitis and other IBDs.

Inflammatory Bowel Diseases

Inflammatory bowel diseases (IBDs), including Crohn’s disease (CD) and ulcerative colitis (UC), are prevalent and debilitating health problems worldwide. Many types of drugs are used to treat IBDs, but they exhibit adverse effects such as vomiting, nausea, abdominal pain, diarrhea, etc. In order to overcome the limitations of current therapeutic drugs, scientists have searched for functional foods from natural resources.

In this study, they investigated the anti-colitic effects of Wasabia Japonica. Wasabi Japonica is a family of Brassicaceae that has recently been reported to exhibit properties of detoxification, anti-inflammation, and induction of apoptosis in cancer cells.

The Studies Conclusion

In conclusion, Wasabia japonica prevented development of colitis through inhibition of the NF-kB signaling pathway and recovery of epithelial tight junctions. Therefore, they suggest that Wasabia japonica can be used as a new functional food to prevent IBDs due to its anti-colitic effect.

That will probably mean that you might start seeing Wasabia japonica appearing on the ingredients list of some more food in the supermarket. I must admit that I see this as being unlikely, but if it does happen it will in the expensive quasi-medicine aisles.
