14 Commandments you must follow if you want to be a successful Wasabi Grower.
-
Thou shall check and double-check that you have a market.
-
Thou shall use an all-weather growing area that is close to the found market.
-
Thou shall grow enough wasabi to make a profit.
-
Thou shall ensure you have access to enough water.
-
Thou shall ensure you have access to specialised technicians (plumbers, pipe layers, electricians, etc).
-
Thou shall make sure you have enough resources (money, time, and personal energy) available to survive until harvest and beyond.
-
Thou shall ensure you have a contingency plan for disasters.
-
Thou shall have faith in yourself, (your immediate family) and what you are doing.
-
Thou shall be steadfast and unwavering in the face of the naysayers and sniggering peoples, especially when things seem to be going wrong.
-
Thou shall diligently and constantly learn more about Wasabi and the marketing thereof.
-
Thou shall prepare and follow a well thought out written Business and Marketing Plan.
-
Thou shall rely on yourself before all others.
-
Thou shall not expand too fast and become a victim of greed and over-reaching.
-
Thou shall not listen to Academics and people without significant “dirty hand” growing experience.
All of the above 14 Commandments have been found to be true over the last 27 years or so.
It is really no different to starting and getting profitable any new business. In this case because of the long growing time involved with Wasabi japonica these 14 Commandments take on more significance. Each one is nearly as important as each other, but the one above all others is Number 1 – Make sure you have a market and then double check that.
We know there are Academics and other people who are running around trying to get people to invest in either shared Wasabia japonica or their own growing facilities. These people do not have a robust marketing system, or even sufficient knowledge of the various growing methods to offer you the correct method for your area. Instead they sell the same “system” to everyone. Most of these “systems” are prone to disease and significant other problems that have involved a number of State Universities in North America (both USA and Canada) without finding a solution. You can read about some of that here – Is US Wasabi Industry on verge of collapse?
There are methods and growing systems for growing Wasabia japonica anywhere in the world. The requirements for growing Wasabia japonica do not change, just the means of achieving those requirements change. For that reason you need to get experienced input to get your solution right from the start.
I am sure there are a number of people out there who think I have the 14 Commandments wrong, and you are all welcome to use the comment section which is below to make your feeling known in a constructive manner. 🙂
Michel Van Mellaerts (The Wasabi Maestro) is the recognized World authority and expert on the practical Growing, Processing and Marketing of Wasabia japonica. He and his wife have been commercially growing Wasabia japonica longer than anyone else outside Japan.
Trained as an Engineer he has invented and installed many improved growing systems into their farms. These enable high quality Wasabi to be grown anywhere in the World.
The Wasabi Maestroes have set up commercial Wasabi growing farms from the Arctic Circle to Southern New Zealand, including the Equator. They have worked with individual growers, national governments, and investment groups on four continents.
These growing systems have reduced growing times by nearly 67%, improved yield and quality of the Wasabi rhizome, and increased the levels of active ingredients by nearly 100%. It is these active ingredients that independent scientific studies show kills cancer cells and improves human health.
They pioneered the use of Wasabia japonica in the Nutraceutical and Medical industries. They are at the leading edge of research into the benefits of Wasabi on human and animal health.
The Wasabi Maestroes offer a Training and Consultancy service for potential and actual Wasabi growers who only want to learn from the best. Others spend their time floundering around trying to find out what information is useful and what isn’t.
The Training has been proven and improved over the last 20 years plus of personal commercial Wasabi growing. This has been hands on, getting wet and dirty work – not guesswork from behind a desk.
