This is a new product that was released to the world at Distil 2010 in May 2010 in London. It was first produced in New Zealand by the Wasabi Maestro in 1996 but withdrawn in 1998 because the world was not ready for it. Now the world is ready for it and in the last year won 2 medals in various International Spirit Competitions.
The Judges Tasting Notes were as follows:
Pale, wasabi green. Powerful nose delivering a solid whack of wasabi leaving no space for anything else but tears. Great nasal clearing capacity. Ultra clean delivery in the mouth that highlights the wasabi. The alcohol adds to the volatility and pepperiness . Then, in a flash the sensation is gone and you want to do it again! Kind of addictive!

This product contains only 100% wasabi rhizome apart from the alcohol. I was lucky enough to taste this product in London and was totally gobsmacked. It smells like Wasabi, tastes like Wasabi and has a kick like Wasabi.
This product is beyond awesome – it is unbelievable. I can’t wait to see what other products this company puts out.

This amazing drink is now available to bars and clubs in New Zealand. I am lucky enough to have a bottle sitting on my desk while I write this review, and the colour is unbelievable – it is a sparkling clear green that picks up the sun and sprays it around the bottle.
I have never tasted anything like this. The Judges notes above are spot on. I have tried it with fruit juices, sparkling mixes and neat and I am amazed at its versatility and ability to mix and match. I can’t wait to see what mixologists come up with to delight our taste buds in the bars and clubs. 🙂
The bottle itself deserves a mention – it is subtly embossed with skeletonised wasabi leaves and has the story on the bottle. The medals really stand out against the light green of the spirit. The picture with this post does not do the bottle justice. Maybe I can get a better one next time. 🙂
