Research or Commercial Wasabi Growing?
More and more people are putting their hands up to become a Wasabi grower as they see the demand for new flavors increasing. This together with continuing number of scientific studies showing that Wasabia japonica has a large number of very good health benefits – one of the major ones being its ability to kill most cancer cells in the human body.
However, these prospective Wasabi growers appear to be unclear whether they want to set up a Wasabi Growing Research Farm with only a few plants “to try” for the next five years or so while they figure things out, or actually want a commercial wasabi growing farm with a solid ROI in 18 months or so.
It is this sitting on the fence I find difficult to understand. Yes, I realise that it is fear that generates this sitting on the fence, but with 27 years of growing this unique plant in many different environments, I can categorically say that the information is readily available for those who actually want to commercially grow Wasabia japonica.
The desire to reinvent the wheel seems to be an overwhelming attitude. Even the centres of higher learning (Universities, Colleges, High Schools) are even encouraging their students to set up final projects to find the parameters for growing Wasabia japonica in small numbers. This in my view is a complete waste of both the Students and the Universities time because this information is available and has been used commercially by ourselves for nearly 3 decades, and in Japan for thousands of years. This attitude for repeating work with known outcomes does not benefit the student in any shape or form. They do not learn anything new, and knowledge is not advanced in any way.
So let me come back to the question I asked at the beginning.
If you want to “try” a few plants then do you want to start from basic principles knowing nothing and just stumble through things until something positive happens. Or do you want to at least start from a point where you have the basic information on hand. If so then you can purchase the Wasabi Growers Primer at USD$497.00 which contains all the basic information to get results with from the start.
If you want to become a Commercial Wasabi Grower from the beginning without going through all the false starts and directions, then you will need to have a mentor who has the practical knowledge to ensure you do not make a costly mistake. If that is the case then you need to contact Michel Van Mellaerts immediately.
