A new version of the Wasabi List has been released.
Now has 75 brands on this list. 3 only are true to label. All the rest are fakes with misleading labelling and wording.
97.8% of all checked "Wasabi" products are FAKES.
You are paying premium prices for a mixture of mustard, horseradish and various colouring, flavouring and stabilising additives. Most of these mixtures come from China or Japan, although a few are from Thailand and Korea. The interesting thing here is that the base products (mustard and Horseradish) are likely to have been imported from China.
Most of the additives are FDA approved, but have been shown to cause cancer in a number of studies.
Most mustard these days is grown from GM seed, which not only introduces GMO's into your body, but also contributes to killing the worlds bee population. Without bees and other insect pollinators most crops, fruits and flowers will not provide food or pleasure for future generations.
If you have a search on the internet you will find fake wasabi available from China for less than USD2.00 per Kilogram (2.2 lbs) if you buy a tonne (1000 kgs) at a time. You can bet your life that the companies shown on this list are buying it in larger quantities than 1 tonne and paying a lot lower price.
The mark up on this fake wasabi is very large and unjustified. These companies are effectively destroying the True Wasabi growers livelihood with this unhealthy substitute.
You can download this latest version here.
There are more and more “Wasabi” products coming on the market and yet they are all fake or diluted to such an extent that there is no flavour that you can taste from true Wasabia japonica.
The only 100% Pure Wasabia japonica powders available to the public are Namida 100% Pure Wasabia japonica powder, and Sawa and Sawasabi powders from the same company.
The worse case I came across was a UK product that claimed it had 20% of Wasabi LEAF in it – LEAF is only used as a colouring agent and when you worked out the per Kilogram cost it came to a whopping USD1875.00, or USD855.00 per pound. Note that this is for LEAF which has almost zero flavour.
